I would recommend using EBSCOhost, as it has the main theatre database - International Bibliography of Theatre & Dance - and several good literature databases, including MLA.

For all of these databases, click on the DATABASES tab in the blue search box on the library homepage, and then E for EBSCOhost, J for JSTOR, etc.
Try searching: theater audiences
That's a Library of Congress subject term that should be helpful in identifying the kind of articles you'd like.
When using EBSCOhost, look at the subject terms that are listed under each article - that may give you other ideas. Especially on articles that are getting closer to what you want.
You can also search for books by clicking on the CATALOG tab on the library homepage. Maybe just use the term: audiences.
