For ARTICLES, I would suggest starting with EBSCOhost - click on DATABASES at the bottom of the library homepage, then the letter 'E,' then scroll down until you see the database.
Try a search like this: (race or racism) and midwest and "united states"
You could also substitute specific states (Ohio, Michigan) or cities (Chicago, St. Louis) for 'midwest.'
In addition to EBSCOhost, you can also search in JSTOR, Project Muse, and Ethnic Newswatch.
For BOOKS, try entering search terms like: midwest and (race or racism) in the Search box on the homepage. Limit the retrieved results to Catalog Only.
You'll see, for example, something like: Gender, race, and politics in the Midwest : Black club women in Illinois / Hendricks, Wanda A. / Main Library Stacks F550.N4 H46 1998 - Normal Loan
Again, it might be more effective to try different states: Illinois and (race or racism), or Michigan, etc.
